Free Fire Max, developed by Singapore-based Garena, has emerged as the leading esports title in India, surpassing BattleGrounds Mobile India (BGMI), according to third-party data and gaming industry insiders.
The shift in popularity occurred in September 2023, with Free Fire Max securing the top position in the country's esports scene by November. Comscore's data reveals that Free Fire Max boasts over 28 million monthly unique users, outpacing BGMI's 21 million players.
Comscore also notes that Free Fire Max managed to avoid a government ban that affected its sister game, Free Fire, in February 2022. Although it briefly surrendered the top spot to BGMI in June 2023, following the latter's resumption of operations,Free Fire Max reclaimed its position after three months.
Despite potentially having a lower average revenue per user (ARPU) compared to some games, Free Fire Max has cultivated a dedicated and resilient audience. Akshat Rathee, co-founder of esports firm Nodwin Gaming, emphasized,"Free Fire Max might have a lower average revenue per user (ARPU) compared to some games, but they have a very loyal and robust audience that keeps coming back through all the troubles that the game faced."
Similar to BGMI, Free Fire Max involves players competing against each other, either individually or in teams of four, within a confined virtual space. The objective is for the last gamer or team standing to emerge victorious. Despite facing challenges, Free Fire Max has managed to maintain its popularity and engagement, showcasing its resilience in the competitive gaming landscape.
